Job match
Match Your Resume to a Job Description
Paste a job description next to your resume to see which of its skills and title keywords you already cover and which are missing, then tailor your wording without claiming experience you don't have.
What it compares
Job match is the fifth category of the ATS check, worth 20% of the score when a job description is provided. It compares:
- Hard skills: tools, technologies, methods and domain terms in the posting, and whether your resume mentions them.
- Soft skills named in the posting, such as stakeholder management or mentoring.
- Job title: whether your headline lines up with the role you're applying for.
Matching treats common equivalent spellings as the same (Node.js and NodeJS, PostgreSQL and Postgres, Kubernetes and K8s) but keeps different things apart: Java isn't JavaScript. A term repeated many times in a posting counts once.
How it works
- Paste the job descriptionIn the ATS checker or the editor's ATS tab. From job search, “Tailor resume” fills it in for you.
- See matched and missing termsThe report lists what's covered and what isn't. The optional AI review adds its own matched and missing skills lists.
- Decide what's trueA missing term you genuinely have belongs in your bullets or skills. One you don't have stays out.
- TailorEdit by hand, or use Tailor resume to job, which rewrites wording but won't add the posting's skills as yours.
Limitations
Keyword coverage is a proxy for relevance, not a hiring prediction. Employers weigh experience, context and judgement that no keyword list captures. Aim to cover the requirements you really meet, in the posting's language, rather than chasing 100%. Our tailoring guide walks through the process.
